Frederick was the second of five children of Dr. David and June (Nickerson) Curtis. He had three brothers, David M. Jr., Peter E. & James A. Curtis, and one sister, Joan Curtis.

At age 20, Frederick began his military service on 9 November 1968 in the U.S. Army in Vietnam with the 4th Infantry Division, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Squad, Troop C Company at the rank of Specialist 4th Class. He died tragically as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds inflicted by enemy fire in his 21st year.
