John Arnold Curtis was the oldest of four sons of Charles W. and Cora Belle (Arnold) Curtis. He rose to become president of the family business, Curtis Shoe Company of Marlborough, Mass. Following retirement he and wife, Dorothy, moved to Cape Cod where they spent their final years. A career highlight was the 1943 ceremony at Curtis Shoe, when the U.S. Navy received the millionth pair of shoes supplied during WWII and the company was awarded for its contributions to the war effort.
John married Dorothy Rumsey Mercer of Waterloo, New York on 29 November 1910 in Newton, MA. John and Dorothy had five sons, John Arnold Jr., Mercer Edwin, David Myndert, Willis Lansing and Donald Putnam Curtis. They also adopted a niece, Louise Esther Curtis, daughter of Roger and Esther (Hitchings) Curtis, when Esther succumbed to childbirth.
