Margaret Alexander Peale was the second wife of Congressman John Covode of Pennsylvania, whom she married on December 21, 1848. She was descended from the illustrious Peale family of American painters, which began with Charles Willson Peale (b. 1741 d. 1827). Margaret was the daughter of Jonathan Peale (b. 1798 d. 1858) and Hannah Thompson (b. 1800 d. 1874). She had four children who lived to adulthood, John Alexander, James Henry, Harry and Mary Emma Covode. Three children who died as infants are buried with their father in Pennsylvania. Her last years, as a widow, were spent living with daughter, Emma (Covode) Blair in Grand Rapids.
