Jane Mellen Putnam was the daughter of Lewis Putnam of Grafton, Worcester County, Mass. and Puah Mellen of Holliston, Middlesex County, Mass. She was a direct descendant of Deacon Edward Putnam of Salem Village, Essex County, Mass., an uncle of General Israel Putnam, Find-A-Grave Memorial No. 57173046. Jane married John Edwin Curtis on 2 February 1853 in Southville, Worcester County, Mass. They had eight children, including twins, John Edwin Jr. and Carrie Fay Curtis, who died as infants. Two sons lived to adulthood, Arthur Putnam and Charles Willis Curtis, along with four daughters, Anna L., Mary E., Jennie L. and Lillian F. Curtis. Only Jennie married, while Mary and Lillian became school teachers, the latter becoming assistant principal of the Hildreth School, Marlborough, Mass. Jane and John Edwin Curtis lived in an historic homestead on Main Street in Marlborough and acquired the old Maynard place on Fort Meadow as a Summer home.
