Grant Wheat was inventor of the electric miner's cap lamp, which he created in his Marlborough laboratory. The first Wheat Rechargeable Cap Lamp won U.S. Bureau of Mines approval in 1919 and became one of the first such lamps to be used in this country. These lamps are still in use in mines today around the world made by the Koehler Company in the US and Oldham & Son Ltd of the UK. The original Wheat lamp is in the Smithsonian Institute. He was married to Mary Robertson and was a Free Mason. On his gravestone is appropriately inscribed "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." Matthew 5:16
