Miss Sallie Mae Pope, age 101 years and 20 days, of 1937 Jenks Avenue, Panama City, Florida, died Saturday, February 28, 2009 in a local hospital. Miss Pope was born in Ozark, Alabama, but resided in Ariton, Alabama for most of her life. She was a gentle caregiver who spent her career and life helping other people. She was also a floral designer and knowledgeable gardener who enjoyed sharing her love of flowers with her many friends. During the 1960's she lived in Riverside, CA then moved back to Alabama to live prior to moving to Panama City in 1986. She was a member of Pleasant Ridge Methodist Church, Ariton, AL and a member of the Althea Sunday School class of Central Baptist Church, Panama City, FL. Miss Pope was preceded in death by her parents John Wesley and Mary Alice Pope, brother Emmett Pope and wife Reffie, brother Samuel Pope and wife Ollie Mae, sister Bessie Guilford and husband Ronald, and sister Erma Paramore and husband Jay. She is survived by ten nieces and nephews; Frank Pope and wife Martha of Riverside, CA, Jack Pope and wife Riki of Panama City, FL, Terry Pope of Hemet, CA, Frances McNair of Hemet, CA, Danny Pope and wife Dana of Georgetown, TX, Paul Guilford of Forest Park, GA, Reba Johnson of Panama City, FL, Mary Ellen Mildrum and husband Allen of Ozark, AL, Thomas Pope and wife Betty of Pleasant Grove, AL, and Jaykye Paramore and wife Loxi of Milton, FL, first cousins Sarah Ezell of Ariton, AL and Joe Blocker of Chattanooga, TN. She is also survived by dozens of great, great-great, and great-great-great nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held this afternoon at 1:00 P.M. at the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Ariton, AL. Miss Pope's nephew Thomas Pope will officiate. Miss Pope's nephews will serve as her pallbearers.
