Gerald C. ‘Louie' Brunkhorst, 77

SPRING VALLEY - Gerald Charles "Louie" Brunkhorst, age 77, of Spring Valley died Friday, June 4, 1999, at River Falls Area Hospital, River Falls. He had been taken by ambulance to the hospital a few days earlier.

He was born Oct. 24, 1921, the son of Irvin and Clara (Thomforde) Brunkhorst at Belvedere, Minn. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith and was a long-time member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Spring Valley. He grew up and attended school in MInnesota. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force during WWII. After service, he returned home and helped farm the family farm in Minnesota for a while. He then moved to the Spring Valley area.

On Sept. 10, 1949, he married Joan Hampton at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. They lived near Spring Valley, then lived at Kent, Wash., for about three years. They returned to Spring Valley in 1958.

He was involved with farming, cattle buying, auction services and road construction. He drove horse for many local parades and loved the horse pull competitions.

Survivors include: five children, Marsha Brunkhorst of Spring Valley, Jack (Barb) Brunkhorst of Dallas, Kathy (Duane) Miller, Denise (Ken) Witucki and Jeri Brunkhorst, all of Spring Valley; 10 grandchildren, Dean Brunkhorst, Dennis (Karen) Brunkhorst, Bryan (Andrea) Lee, Brent Brunkhorst, Kristy Brunkhorst, Heidi, Robby, Tracy and Charles Miller and Tammy Brunkhorst; and two great grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Neil (Phyllis) Brunkhorst of Prescott; three sisters, Kathryn Chambers of Ellsworth, Lorraine (Vic) Zillmer, Yuma, Ariz., and Carol (Byron) Lambert of Naches, Wash.; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were Monday June 7, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Spring Valley. Rev. Martin Wegner officiated the service with music provided by Kathy Brown with congregational singing. Burial was in the St. Michael's Cemetery, Spring Valley. Bearers were Dan Brunkhosrt, Dave Brunkhorst, Marvin Chambers, Jamie Smith, Waughnel Plahn and Wayne Plahn.

Keehr Funeral Home, Spring Valley, handled arrangements.
