James was named for his grandfather Sheriff James Cameron of Burlington, Iowa and his second cousin Joseph Sevier Hawkins. Joesph was named for his Great-great Uncle, 1st Gov of the states of Franklin and Tennessee, John Sevier.

James moved to Omaha in the late 1860s and by 1871 he married Isadore Watson of Belleview, Nebraska in Sarpy County. The Camerons lived around Omaha and Lincoln for the next 40 years.

James was superintendent of the County Poor Farm and also ran a livery business for two years. In 1879 James became manager of the New American Sewing Machine Company for the state of Nebraska. While living in Lincoln, James owned and operated a piano store. According to several newspaper accounts, James Cameron was a good piano salesman.

Because of poor health, James sold his stock in his music store in 1910. After a short illness, James died in Omaha in 1911.
