Josiah was killed by guerrillas in skirmish outside of Osceola, Missouri in late May of 1862. In 1862, Union troops from Iowa were stationed in Missouri for the protection of farmers from Southern troops and guerrillas during the Civil War. He served as a private in Company G 1st Iowa Calvary.
Josiah body was returned Burlington and is buried in Aspen Grove. He is also listed on his father's monument in Aspen Grove.
