Bill was born the youngest of four children to James H. Ball and Elizabeth Marlin.
He was married to an unknown woman with whom he had one son, William M. Ball born in 1898. Family lore has it that she was an inmate in a mental institute.
After the death of his maternal uncle John Kidd Marlin in 1906, he married his widow Mary Ann Harrop Marlin sometime after 1910.
Bill was a machine shop machinist by trade.
Over the years he lived at a variety of addresses in Philadelphia. He died at 1030 Shunk Street, Philadelphia.
