On February 4, 2012, Sarah Bajo passed away in the home where she had devotedly raised her 15 children.
Sarah, born September 11, 1920, in the small logging town of Raywood, West Virginia, was the youngest of seven children born to Caroline and William Harrison Warn. At age six, the family moved to Milan, Indiana where she enjoyed a happy childhood. During the Depression, her family moved to Ontario, CA, where she graduated high school and attended college. Sarah earned her RN degree in 1943 from Mercy College of Nursing in San Diego. During WWII, she enlisted in the Army Nursing Corps and served in an army hospital, caring for wounded soldiers.
After the war, she returned to San Diego Mercy Hospital where she met her future husband, Dr. Michael Bajo. Michael and Sarah were married in 1946. Together, the couple set up a medical practice in San Ysidro where they provided care to the underserved for the next 55 years.
Sarah and Michael lovingly raised their 15 children, four of whom were adopted, on their ranch near Imperial Beach. She turned "Rancho Las Palmas" into a paradise for her kids, her 42 grandchildren, and her nine great-grandchildren. Sarah filled their lives with fun, imagination, and the joy of sharing special moments with her and each other.
Sarah loved sports and the outdoors. She was a poet and greatly enjoyed playing her harmonica for any occasion. In 1962, she was selected as Mercy Mother of the Year. She was again honored in 2000 as the March of Dimes Mother of the Year. Her husband, Dr. Michael Bajo, passed away in 2008. Sarah leaves a legacy of boundless love, tremendous energy, generosity, and the joy of life.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to San Diego Hospice. A rosary service will be held at Community Mortuary at 855 Broadway in Chula Vista on Thursday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be Friday, Feb. 10 at 12 p.m. at St. Charles Parish in Imperial Beach.
