Although it is not positively known that Robert and his wife Nancy Meador are buried at Baker's Forge, I am creating this memorial based on information regarding the Norris Reservoir grave removals in the 1930s. Hundreds of re-interments in parts of East Tennessee including Campbell, Claiborne and Union Counties had to be made or graves would be covered by the Reservoir waters. This cemetery was specifically created for re-interments. Records indicate that six Butlers were re-interred from the Spangler Cemetery to Baker's Forge. Only three individuals were named and they were Robert, John and Mary. Dates were unknown for all six individuals. The next of kin who authorized the re-interment of these six Butlers was a granddaughter of Robert and Nancy, Alice Butler Parrott of LaFollette, daughter of Elizabeth Butler and wife of George Parrott.

The 1900 census gives Robert's birth date of August 1814 and most other census years agree with the 1814 birth year. In Robert's application for parent's pension pictured on this memorial he states his age as being 75 in 1890. This application was submitted under the service record of Robert's son Henry.

Peter Graham Fulkerson included some of the children of Robert and Nancy in his writings of early settlers. He had the following comments:

1) J.M. Butler, son of Robert, came from Eastern VA. The father came to Well's Spring about 1810. He was of Irish descent. [see below] J.M. married Martha St. John, removed to the West. [Fulkerson confused John Milton aka John Marion [who died of disease during the Civil War] with James G. and thus did not have any comments with regard to John Milton below.]
2) Robert Houston married Rebecca Turner [Richardson], removed to Missouri.
3) Milton – blank;
4) D. C. married Sallie Monday [Sarah] removed to Oklahoma;
5) Wm. B., removed to Missouri;
6) W. Harvey married Susan Pierce, removed to Campbell County.
7) Joseph F. removed to Indiana;
8) Amanda married Charles McGloflin, removed to Campbell County.
9) Edna [Edith] married William Turner.
10) James G., Robert Houston, John Milton, D.C. [Doctor Clinton] and William B. [see below] were in the Federal Army. Milton was captured and dies in the army.

Mr. Fulkerson failed to include Henry as one of the sons who served in the Federal Army. Henry and four of his brothers all served in Co. B of the 11th Tenn. Cav. William B. initially joined the Confederacy, not the Union, serving in Co. C, 60th Regiment Georgia Infantry. He was captured near the end of the war and then given the opportunity, which he took advantage of, to serve his final 6 months of the War in the Union Navy. He wears the GAR badge in a photo posted on Find A Grave.

It is in Robert's application for parent's pension, pursuant to Henry's service in the War, that we learn of some events in Robert's life, including his date of marriage to Nancy and date of her death. A page of his application is on this memorial.

In regard to Mr. Fulkerson's comment "The father came to Well's Spring about 1810." This comment is most likely directed at Robert's father as Robert was born in Virginia, so perhaps he came to Tennessee with his parents as a small boy about 4 years old. Or perhaps Mr. Fulkerson's information in regard to the date of the arrival of the Butlers in Tennessee was simply inaccurate.
