Carrie Mary (also known as Mary Caroline) Mitchell was born to Thomas C. and Martha Ellen (McNeil) Mitchell in October, 1855. Both of her parents were born in Ohio and the family moved to Oregon at some point, probably at the same time their daughter, her husband and son relocated to Oregon. Carrie met and married Alvin Aloia Straney (b.Nov 1860) of Illinois at North Bend, Dodge Co., Nebraska on Feb 9th, 1887. They had three sons together. Clinton Oscar Straney was born at North Bend, Dodge Co., Nebraska on May 13, 1888. Their 2nd child, also a son, was Everett, born Feb 28, 1892. He died on Sep 8, 1894, in Albany, Oregon, so they had moved after 1892 and prior to September, 1894, however. Carrie and Alvin's 3rd and last son, Orral John Straney was b. July 16, 1896 in Albany, Oregon. When the 1900 Census was taken on June 7th, 1900, Carrie, her husband, sons Clinton and Orral, her father-in-law, John B. Straney (b.Nov 1825, Kentucky), a widower, and her sister-in-law, Maggie A. (Straney) Andrews, (b.Dec 1855, Indiana), married with two children, Jay S. Andrews (b.Dec 1887, Kansas) in school, and daughter Vesta S. Andrews (b.Apr 1894, Kansas) were in the home. Her husband did not list any employment or income and died June 8, 1900, just two days after the census was taken. He was buried at Riverside Cemetery in Albany, Linn County, Oregon. Carrie was now a widow with two children. It is not known when she met Hezekiah Davidson Burkhart (1853-1924) of Albany. His wife, Emily Mary (Geisendorfer) had passed in 1899, leaving him a widower with three children. Carrie and Hezekiah married on Nov 23, 1904 and had five children between the two of them. Carrie's father, Thomas C. Mitchell, died Feb 28, 1910 and was buried at Riverside Cemetery in Albany, Linn County, OR, plot 66n. Carrie's mother, Martha Ellen (McNeil) Mitchell, moved into the home of Hezekiah and Carrie Burkhart, per a 1910 U S Census. Carrie's older son, Clinton, married Anna Violet Cornett in April, 1911 and moved out of the home. He died in Linn County, OR on Oct 26, 1962. Her younger son, Orral, married a woman named Mildred about 1920. He died in Santa Cruz, CA on Dec 9, 1977. Carrie's mother, Martha Ellen Mitchell, who was living with Caroline and Hezekiah following her husband's death, died on Apr 4, 1913 and was buried with her husband at Riverside Cemetery, Albany, OR, plot 66n. Carrie's 2nd husband, Hezekiah Davidson Burkhart, died on July 25, 1924 and was buried next to his 1st wife at Knox Butte Cemetery, near Albany, Linn County, Oregon. Carrie did not remarry, remaining a widow until her death on July 3rd, 1931 in Linn County, Oregon. Since a plot had been purchased for her at the time of her 1st husband's death, Carrie Mary Burkhart was buried next to Alvin Straney at Riverside Cemetery, Albany, Oregon under her previously married name of Carrie M Straney in plot 24n, although her date of death was never chiseled into the headstone that they share. May they Rest in Peace.
