Helen Louise Taylor Hussar is my maternal aunt, the elder sister of my mother.
Helen Louise (Taylor) Hussar was the older daughter of Harry Hoyt and Pearl Laura Taylor. She was born in Marshfield, Oregon, which is now known as Coos Bay, in Coos Co., Oregon. She graduated from Washington High School in Portland, Oregon, in 1926. She then attended college to become a Lab and X-Ray Technician before joining her family in South Carolina during World War II. She went to work as a Lab and X-Ray Technician at the Tuscaloosa, Alabama Army hospital, holding onto the patients (soldiers) for different X-Rays. Due to prolonged exposure, she was to suffer from numerous cancers in later life and was unable to have children. It was here that she met and later married Dr. Allen E. Hussar, who also worked at the hospital. Following the war, they continued to live in Tuscaloosa, Alabama before moving to New York after 1950, where he worked at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Veterans Administration Hospital, in Montrose, New York, eventually becoming Chief of Staff. Upon retirement, they moved to the Bronx, New York, where they both lived until they died. During their lives, they traveled frequently to Europe and delighted in sending back presents to their three nieces, as they had no children of their own. Helen died from a heart attack just 15 days before her 65th birthday, on Aug 12th, 1983. She was cremated at Ferncliff Crematory in Hartsdale, New York on Aug 15th, 1983. Her ashes are being held by her husband's cousins for interment at an undetermined location, some time in the future.
