Glenn Harry Miller Professor Emeritus of Chemistry of the University of California at Santa Barbara, CA, died Monday, November 9, in Tucson, Arizona. He was an extraordinary husband, father and friend.

He was born February 10, 1922 in Pittsburgh, PA. As a boy, he attained the treasured rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. He received his Bachelor of Science degree with highest honors from Geneva College in Beaver Falls, PA (1943), and his doctorate degree in chemistry from Brown University in Providence, RI (1948).

He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946.

Miller taught at the University of California from 1949 through 1988, serving as the first Chairman of the newly formed Department of Chemistry in Santa Barbara in 1960 and as Administrator of the University of California's Education Abroad program in Nairobi, Kenya from 1984-87. On his sabbaticals, he and his family traveled the world. In 1956-57, he received a fellowship from and did research at the Canadian National Research Council Laboratories in Ottawa, Canada. In 1962, he returned to Canada for a year of research at The Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario. He also contributed his considerable knowledge and enthusiasm for chemistry to teaching students at the University of Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (1967-68), the University of Liberia, Monrovia, Liberia, (1974-75 and 1980), and the University of Nairobi in Kenya (1984-1987). His years in Liberia and Malaysia were funded by Fulbright Grants.

A physical chemist, Miller wrote three general chemistry texts, one of which was translated into Spanish, published numerous articles in the Journal of Physical Chemistry, presented scientific papers in Canada, France, and Czechoslovakia, and taught the University of California Extension course on general chemistry. He was a life-long member of the American Chemical Society and of Sigma Xi, the international honor society of science and engineering.

In the summer of 1950, Miller proposed to Mary Agnes McKay on Catalina Island. The couple wed in Santa Barbara, CA, on February 10, 1951, forming a partnership that endured 58 years. Dr. and Mrs. Miller lived in Santa Barbara until his retirement in 1988, when he and his wife moved to Tucson, Arizona Miller's interests ranged far and wide. He gathered an extensive, meticulous collection of Malaysian, Liberian, and Kenyan butterflies which was eventually donated to the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity at the University of Florida. For many years he patiently excavated bones he found in his yard in California. The resulting, nearly complete, skeleton of a fossil baleen whale dating back to the Oligocene Period was donated to the Los Angeles County Museum in 1990.

In Tucson, Miller was active in the Cactus and Succulent Society and the "bug boys," took pleasure playing poker and bridge with friends, collected minerals with Harrison Yocum's Rockhounds, and researched the family's genealogy in cross-country trips with his wife, Mary. He was inducted into the BPOE in Goleta, CA, and was a member for 30 years.

Miller was a member of St Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Tucson, and his final resting place will be in the church's columbarium. His last days were eased by the ministry of the staffs of St. Andrews and of Casa de la Luz Hospice, to whom his family will be forever grateful. He is survived by his wife, Mary; three daughters, Laurie (Miller) Landa of New Fairfield, CT, Marilyn Miller of Tucson, AZ, and Jeanne Miller (Culhane) of Olympia, WA; and three grandchildren, Erik Landa, Kathryn Culhane, and Ian Culhane.

A Memorial Service is scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Thursday, November 19, 2009, at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Tucson, AZ. Related services have been provided by DESERT SUNSET FUNERAL HOME in Tucson, AZ. The family asks that any memorial gifts be made to Casa de la Luz Foundation (Hospice), 400 West Magee Road, Tucson, AZ 85704, or to Disabled American Veterans, PO Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH, 45250-0301, http://www.dav.org/donate/Default.aspx.
