Mother was listed as Bonna May on her birth certificate. She said the nurse at the hospital made a mistake and she never went by anything other than Bonnie Marie. She was the youngest of 3 girls. Clyde Madeline Housmon McKittrick and Thelma Roberta Housmon Felty Bradley pre-deceased her as did her parents Claude Sylvester Housmon and Nannie Graves Housmon and daughter Judith Ann Dixon.
Mother married Joe Miller Dixon in Henderson, Kentucky in May of 1938 Mama once told me she was engaged to a farmer when she met Dad on a Friday night. They eloped Sunday. She left the ring and a note on the kitchen table for my grandmother, Nannie, to give back to the young man.I have often smiled at the thought of my grandmother's face when she found that note. Mama was working in a doctor's office at the time. Nannie also had to call her boss and tell him she wouldn't be coming back to work. Dad apparently was a bit of a wild one. His mother, Martha Jane Burgess Dixon (Memorial Park Cemetery, Oklahoma City) said someone needed to marry him and settle him down. She later told my mother "I didn't mean YOU Bonnie". Mother and Martha Jane got along well. My parents divorced in the early 1960s.
Every year when the Texas State Fair opened in Dallas she would take me and 10 of my best high school buddies to Dallas. We would stay at the Adolphus Hotel in downtown Dallas, buy fudge at the Russel Stover shop a block away and go to the Texas State Fair. One year I got my period while we were there. So did 8 of the other girls. By the 5th or 6th time she went to buy Kotex the Pharmacist was beginning to wonder about this woman and ask questions. She always kept Butterfingers, Baby Ruths, Hershey bars and Almond Joys in her refrigerator. Grandchildren loved visiting Grandma and her stash of goodies.
She is survived by one daughter Nancy and her husband, 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Mama was the best role model for love, loyalty, and courage that any girl could be blessed to have. She taught through example. To this day I consider giving my word giving my promise and verbal agreements are to be as honored as written ones. I adored her. I worshiped the ground she walked on and the air she breathed. I still deeply mourn her loss. When she died I lost my best friend. She made an exceptional grandmother. Her first great-grandchild was named Bonna Marie after her.
Mama stood 5 feet tall and was petite. She only wore open heel high heels and never could never stand having her feet covered. She loved to fish. Women were allowed to enter the prestigious Ernest Hemingway Fishing Tournament in Cuba only one year. She caught the biggest fish of the women's group and gave them the tournament win.(Maybe that's why the women were only allowed to enter the one year. Grin!) I have her photo taken with the famous author and her big trophy. Mama was dyslexic. School was hard for her even though she was very smart. She fought for and earned everything she got.In the process she developed a healthy "distrust" of other people. She always got along with them and they always liked her but she never truly trusted anyone. Mama, Nannie (Nancy Cornelia Housmon), Aunt PeeWee (Nannie's sister Ruth Graves) and I were our own little family. Mama I miss you, Nannie and Aunt Ruth.
Mother and all of her family were heavy smokers. She had part of a lung taken out due to cancer then resumed smoking. She died from cancer 3 weeks after the doctor found that the cancer had returned and spread. My wonderful husband would go to the hospital and feed her breakfast since she had gone blind from the cancer and let me go on to work.
Thank you everyone for your flowers. She was a truly special lady. I appreciate the thoughtfulness you display when you remember her. I can only ask those of you who smoke PLEASE DON'T SMOKE. Even second hand cigarette smoke is harmful for those around you.
