John Alexander Gillis' tombstone has a Masonic symbol on it indicating that he was a Freemason. Freemasonry was, and still is, a fraternity that studied and applied the lessons of morality, chivalry, and honor into their lives. All Masons held faith in a Supreme Creator (God) but were free to choose by their own conscious how and by what faith, sect, or religion to worship by. Masons came from all walks of life, and the fraternity was, and still is, based on the equality of men regardless of their race, religion, political beliefs, social or economic status.
