Per son Allen Crawford on October 17, 2001: Edwin was living alone in the little house on Reggie and Mary's farm and had become quite senile. He was still rolling his own cigarettes and smoking at age 89. They had an intercom from his little house to Reggie's house, but Edwin was not using it very well since he had to press a button and hold it to speak into it. After dark one night, Reggie and Mary heard him hollering and they looked out to see him in the yard on fire. There was snow on the ground, Allen remembers. They got the fire out and almost all of his clothes had been burned off, just a little patch of red flannel left on his back. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Jefferson City and died after about 24 hours.
