Son of Edward Fort and Suzanne Stoops. He married Sue Stratton on June 16, 2007, in Peoria. She survives.

Also surviving are his stepchildren, Carrie Jo Stratton, Kyle Seipp, Katelynd Seipp and Kurt Seipp; his mother, Suzanne Stoops; his father, Edward Fort; his grandmother, Susan Ament; his sisters, Kimberly Fort, Linda (Kurt) Hinkle and Peggy Fort; his brother, Richard (Mary) Fort; and many nieces and nephews.

He was a Major in the United States Army for 17 years, serving in Desert Storm and Iraq and other overseas locations, receiving the Bronze Star and Warrior Citizen Award as well as other medals, ribbons and awards.

He received a master's degree in engineering from Western Illinois University and worked as the director of government affairs for the Dr. Comfort Shoe Company of Mequon, Wis. Prior to that, he worked for eServ in Peoria.
