Antonio was the youngest son of Alfonso and Benedetta (nee Di Francisco) Torregrossa. He came to the United States circa 1896 and lived in Lower Manhattan. His father ran a grocery store.

After his father's death in 1910, Antonio assumed responsibility for the care of his mother. On the draft registration card for WWI, he listed his jobs as "Lithographer" and "I take care of my mother."

He served as a Private in the U.S. Army during WWI, enlisting on October 4, 1918. He was discharged on January 24, 1919.

In 1935, Antonio met Jessie Dickerson Panos, whom he later married sometime in the mid-late 1940s.
