During WW1 he served in the 128th infantry, 21nd difision, known as the Terrible Ones by the Germans. They were the first to pierce the Hindenburg line where Herbert was severly wounded by machine gun fire, spending a year in the hospital in France. He suffered from the aftereffects of his wounds and died when he was just 39 years old.
