Radio man Seaman Michael Joseph Balitchik was born on December 17, 1947 and had two years of service in the U.S. Navy, arriving in Vietnam on February 15, 1968. He was assigned to the Detachment Vinh Long, U.S. Naval Support Activity Saigon, U.S. Naval Forces Vietnam.

On April 26, 1968 RMSN Balitchik was killed as the result of a non-hostile accidental homicide. This is defined as a death caused by a lawful act, done under the reasonable belief that no harm is likely to result from such action.
