Robbie is known to have worked as a painter and decorator. He was also known to have been a great piano player. The 1939 census show the entire family - both parents, Robbie and his three siblings - living in Victoria Road, Middlesborough. He is known to have volunteered for Royal Navy service in early 1940. He was 26 years old at the time of his loss.
