Walter was born on 18th July 1907 at Wavendon, Bletchley, England. He was the son of Edgar and Sarah Ambridge. He later married Violet Ambridge.

Walter joined the Royal Marines on 04 September 1924, aged 17 at Southampton. He served aboard H.M.S. Ajax from 16th April 1935 to 11th January 1938. He was subsequently awarded the Naval General Service Medal, Clasp, Palestine 1936-39. He joined Hood in August 1939.

He was 33 years old at the time of his loss.
