John was born on 13th June 1903 to parents John and Eliza Ambrose, of Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.

John joined the Royal Navy on 12th February 1919 as a Boy and underwent his initial training at H.M.S. Ganges before joining his first ship - the battleship Emperor of India on 28th February 1920. Most of his career was spent in big ships and, as can be seen from his service record below, these included the battleships Warspite, Iron Duke and Resolution as well as the cruiser Curacoa

John was one of a large number of men who joined Hood on 8th September as the ship recommissioned following a period in dockyard hands at Portsmouth. His service in the ship throughout the remainder of the 1930s would be mainly in the Mediterranean. He was 37 years old at the time of his loss.
