John was born on 23rd May 1890 to parents James and Isabela Anderson, of Hartlepool, County Durham. John is known to have had two sisters, Jessie and Martha, and a brother named Simpson. The family initially lived at 18 Cleveland Roadbut later relocated to 16 Bell Street following the death of the father, James.

In 1901, John was working as a Millwright and isrecorded as having been employed as a fitter and turner prior to joining the Royal Navy on 10th February 1913. He served for 22 years during which time he progressed from Engine Room Artificer 4th Class to Chief Engine Room Artificer 2nd Class at the time of his retirement in February 1935. The mobilisation associated with the Munich Crisis of September 1938 saw John called back to the service, albeit only for a week before he was demobilised. But less than a year later he was called back a second time as the clouds of war gathered. He joined H.M.S. Despatch in July 1939 and served in her until February 1941 during which time he was advanced to Chief Engine Room Artificer. The date on which he joined Hood is not recorded in his service record but he had only returned to Portsmouth Barracks - H.M.S. Victory II on 7th February 1941 following his service in Despatch. He was 51 years old at the time of his loss.
