Tony, as he was known to his family and friends, was born on 3rd March 1922 in Gillingham, Kent to parents Bernard and Cecelia Bamford. The family later lived in Wokingham, Berkshire. He enlisted in the Navy in 1938.
He was trained at H.M.S. St. Vincent training establishment in Gosport. He joined H.M.S. Hood in the spring of 1939 as Boy Seaman along with several St. Vincent Classmates. He was promoted to Ordinary Seaman in September 1939 and to Able Seaman on 3rd March 1940.
