On 15th May in 1918 the SS War Grange was torpedoed by an enemy U-Boat in the Bristol Channel some 7 miles off Newquay's Towan Head. The town's lifeboat was launched to help the stricken vessel, but five of the steamer's crew were lost. They are commemorated on a plaque in St Michael's Church and are buried in the town cemetery.
