After taking her 'Highers,'(school diploma) she wanted to become a nurse but was made to attend Skerries secretary college in Edinburgh, first, by her mother, who thought that a nursing career was not a suitable one for Nettie. She hated this course but having shorthand skills was very useful when she went to Edinburgh Infirmary to study for three years to become a State Registered Nurse. Midwifery qualifications followed in the Glasgow slums, in the blackout of the war years. Having her midwifery qualifications stopped her entering the three services as she was needed more in the Uk with those qualifications.
At the end of the War, Jimmy (James) Crawley came home from the war for the first time in six years. They married on December 26, 1945, at Townhead Church,Dumfries Scotland. She returned to live in The Isle of Whithorn, and Jimmy worked at Prestrie farm. Muriel born on June 15th,in Dumfries. The family lived in the Isle until 1954, when Nettie and Jimmy moved to Loppington,Shrewsbury to run a home for disabled children. In 1958, they moved to Beech House Gressenhall to be Assistant Matron and Superintendent of a home for 150 old people.Until their retirement they continued to work in four homes for the elderly in Norfolk.Just before they retired they returned as Matron and Superintendent to Beech House. Her daughter, Muriel, was married from here.
On retirement they moved to 23 Falcon Ave, Morningside Edinburgh, and had a very happy life visiting relatives in Scotland, enjoying the three grandchildren, Nicola(Nikki), Sally,and Andrew. and going on many cruises as far afield as South America, and The Black Sea.
Jimmy died on June 6th aged almost 90years in 1996. The following year Nettie moved to Clacton-On-Sea to live near her brother Henry. She enjoyed 18 years in her bungalow and had lots of great experiences in her 80's and90's travelling to Canada, Newfoundland, California and Kansas (USA), the Caribbean, Scandinavia, the Azores, and France . She was a great role model for ageing !
Her last few years were spent with increasing immobility issues but she never lost her positive attitude to life , her fun and her love of family. She never complained and was always interested in what others were doing.She was devastated by the death of her grand-daughter Sally, a great friend and travelling companion on February 10, 2015.
Nettie died on Sunday January 3rd, 2016, suddenly but peacefully in her own home with friends around her. A fitting end for a lovely and much loved lady.
