Ernest's mother moved the entire family to Lincoln county, Kansas after her husband died in Illinois. Some of his siblings stayed in the area when they reached adulthood, while others went to Hamilton, Mo. and western Oklahoma. He married Lucy, from Stafford county. He acquired several quarter sections of land and was successfull in raising cattle, eventually losing everything.
He wore six shooters on both hips when he went into nearby Ellsworth.
Ernest and Lucy divorced about 1921, forcing older children to leave home and fend for themselves, and the younger children, Lloyd, Arthur, and Roy—were put in an orphanage. He never remarried. Family record shows that he operated a small hotel in Salina Kansas in 1923.
