"Allen, Henry Clay. Mr Allen was born July 15, 1844 in Putnam Co., Indiana His father, Robert Newton Allen, was a native of Kentucky, of Scotch-Irish descent. His mother, Elizabeth Talbott, was a native of Kentucky of English descent. They were married in Putnam Co. on the 9th day of April, 1826, shortly after their removal from Kentucky. His father was a farmer and on of the associate Judges of the Circuit Court of Putnam Co. Henry entered college at Greencastle, then known as Asbury University, now Depauw University; but in 1862 he enlisted in the 16th Regiment Indiana Regiment Indiana Volunteers and served until the close of the war. April 8 1864, at the battle of Sabine Crossroads, he received a gun shot wound in the right arm, resulting in an aneurysm of the main artery which disabled him from further active service. From the time he enlisted until he was wounded, he was in every engagement with his regiment, among which were the following: Richmond, Ky, Aug 30 1862; Sherman's first assault on Vicksburg from the yazoo river: Arkansas Post, the entire campaign and seige of Vicksburg until time of surrender; the battles of Fort Gibson, or Magnolia Hills; Champion Hills, and the attack at Jackson after the surrender of Vicksburg.
At the close of the war he returned college, where he graduated in the class of 1869. After his graduation, he moved to Kansas and studied and practiced in that state until 1876. He was elected County Attorney of Neoshe County in 1874, and held that office until he moved to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1876, where he entered into general practice of the law. In 1880, he was employed as attorney for the company owning the entire Street Railway System of the city of Indianapolis and its suburbs, and continued in this position until the year 1894. The business of the company so increased as to require his entire attention for a number of years. This as gave him a large experience in jury trials, and in municipal and corporation law. In 1894 he quit the service of the company to engage in general practice in which he is now engaged, in the city of Indianapolis.
December 1st, 1870 he was married to Miss Alice Smock, at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William A. Smock, of Greencastle, Indiana. Of this marriage they have four living children, one son and three daughters. In politics he has always been an ardent Republican. He is now President of the Indianapolis Bar Association.
