He was an office bearer of the Westbury branch of the Red Cross from its inception in 1914. He was recognised for his services with the Australian Red Cross medal and, in Jun 1953, an MBE, which was presented to him by Queen Elizabeth. For many years he was honorary treasurer of St Andrew's Anglican Church, Westbury, and patron of the RSL sub-branch. He died at his home 'Ard-Na-Glass' on 29 Nov 1957 aged 91 and was cremated at Carr Villa. George attributed his longevity in part to the early morning swims he had throughout the year in Quamby Brook until he was 80.
