Alexander was born on January 1, 1957 in Kutaisi, Georgia. When he was in school, he and his family moved to Lipetsk, Russia, where he spent his late childhood and teenage years. Alexander attended Gymnasium No. 7, participating in swimming and water polo in the local youth group. After he finished high school, he entered the journalism faculty of Lomonosov Moscow State University, graduating in 1980 with a double degree of TV Fiction and Poetry. From there, he returned to Lipetsk, where he spent several years working at a radio station.
In 1984, Alexander joined the USSR State Security Committee. From 1990 to 1993 he served as public relations officer of the group. In the mid '90s he was an adviser to Governor Mikhail Narolina.
Shortly before his death, he had gone back to Lipetsk, his beloved childhood home.
He was awarded the Medal of the Order "For Services to the Motherland" - 2nd degree; the Medal "For Distinction in Military Service" - 3rd degree; two insignias "For Service in Counterintelligence" - 3rd degree.
