Ruth Tipton, Full of Grace, Perseverance
Ruth Burcher Tipton, age 90, a resident of Belmont Tower and formerly of 1048 Sandusky Street, Ashland, died At Belmont Tower on Friday, March 24 of complications with pneumonia.
She was born on November 14, 1915, in Beallsville, Ohio, the daughter of Dr. William Sherwood Burcher and Jessie Thomas Burcher. She graduated from Sunsbury High School and Ohio University where she majored in mathematics. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa honorary society.
Ruth had lived in Ashland since 1939 when her husband, Bob, took a teaching job at Ashland High School. Ruth taught math at Seville, Ohio but her main career was that of being a homemaker, mother, and volunteer.
Survivors include her husband James Robert Tipton, her children Peggy Tipton Lutz and Edwin Lutz, James Sherwood Tipton and his friend Marta, Nancy Tipton Davis and Dr. Robert Davis. Her 7 grandchildren include Jeffrey Lutz (Pam) of Gastonia, N.C. , Scott Lutz (Patricia) of Westford, Massachusetts, Jennifer Tipton Cinkosky (Michael) of Denver, Colorado, James D. Tipton (Tanya) of Salt Lake City, Utah, Margaret Davis Geary (Shawn) of St. Charles, Illinois, Elizabeth Davis Manning (Matt) of Anderson, Indiana and Robert Tipton Davis (Stephanie) of Dayton, Ohio. She also has 13 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Her parents, her brother Albert Burcher, her half sister, Martha Burcher Boyles, and her half brother, Joseph Burcher, preceded her in death.
She was a member of the First Christian Church where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the Hannah Group and Halcyon Club. She served as treasurer of the church for 30 years. She was also a member of Thursday Study Club and the Hillcrest Garden Club. Ruth served as Cub Scout, Girl Scout and Brownie leaders as well as serving at Pleasant Street school in various leadership roles. She was one of the first women elected to the YMCA board of directors and she served as treasurer for 7 years when the YMCA was built on Miller Street. Ruth was an excellent knitter and she made sweaters for all of her children and grandchildren and in later years, she knitted hundreds of booties for newborns at Samaritan Hospital. She also volunteered at Samaritan Hospital and United Way of Ashland County. She played bridge with several bridge clubs over the years and enjoyed the friendships made at the bridge table. Ruth was an excellent cook and she thoroughly enjoyed entertaining friends in her home. She and her husband, Bob, traveled extensively throughout the world with many beloved friends.
Her family describes her as being quiet, thoughtful, full of grace and perseverance, faithful and intelligent.
Heyl Funeral Home is making funeral arrangements. A service is planned for 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 29 at the First Christian Church. Friends may visit one hour prior to the service. Rev. John O'Hara will conduct her celebration of life service and private ceremony for burial of her ashes will be held at a later date for family members at Ashland Cemetery.
