William Matthew "Hewie" Holmes , also affectionately known by his high school classmates as "Sink" Holmes, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, October 16, 2005 at the Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Administration Hospital. He was born on November 8, 1954 in Detroit MI, but enjoyed his childhood in Smithfield, Virginia. He graduated from Westside High School. He was precededin death by his mother, Mattie Rose Johnson-Holmes. He joined First Gravel Hill Baptist Church at an early age. He was employed as a sound engineer by Mach One Sound and was a member of the Theatrical Union IATSE Local 87. He served in the United States Army as a biomedical equipment repair engineer in Aurora, Colorado, where he was honorably discharged as Sergeant. In addition, as a singer and musician, he performed with the Whalers reggae band and jazz great Winton Marcellus.
He is survived by his wife Andea A. Holmes of Richmond, Va., stepdaughter Rachelle Warlington of San Antonio, TX, Father William R. Holmes of Smithfield, Va, three sisters Angelnette H. Dobson of Williamsburg, Alma H. Price and Rosa H. Turner (Anthony) of Smithfield,three brothers Clinton, Aubrey (Diane), and Leon Holmes all of Smithfield, Va., in-laws Aubrey & Rosa Allen of Richmond, two brothers-in-law Davon and Aubrey allen of Richmond, and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
