Military and Spanish politician. He was a main collaborator of Francisco Franco´s regime. Following the Spanish Civil War he became chief of Naval operations of the Admiralty staff. Increasingly controlled governament affairs as vice-premier (1967-1973) and after he was named Prime Minister and likely successor to Franco in June 1973. He was assassinated in Madrid by Basque terrorists from ETA in retaliation for the execution of Basque militants. His death forced the transition toward a democratic governement in Spain.
