Samuel C. Ferrell Jr.
On Monday, Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 2006, Samuel C. Ferrell Jr. of 3rd Avenue, Montgomery, passed away at his home. He had been in declining health for a number of years. He was 85 years of age.
Born Samuel Clinton Ferrell Jr. on Sept. 4, 1921, in Beckley, he was the son of the late Samuel Clinton Ferrell and Goldie Leah Biggs Ferrell Absalom.
Samuel spent his early years at the Biggs Farm (Jamescrest Addition) and Longacre. Moving to Montgomery as a young man, he was a graduate of Gauley Bridge High School and the West Virginia Institute of Technology. He entered the Army Air Force in 1942. He was a decorated veteran of World War II where he held the rank of tech sergeant. Samuel retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1976, having worked in national security. He returned to Montgomery after his retirement. Samuel was a charter member of Smithers Church of Christ. A founding member of the American Air Force Museum in Great Britain, he was a life member of the Air Force Association and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The last survivor of his immediate family, in addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ruth Stafford.
He is survived by his good friend and faithful caregiver, Ada Cottrell of Smithers.
Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, at the Biggs family cemetery, Jamescrest Addition, with Johnathan Baldwin officiating. Military honors will be conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3110, Oak Hill.
Friends may call from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. Friday at Melton Mortuary, 1200 Harper Road, Beckley. Those wishing to attend the graveside services are asked to meet at the mortuary by 12:30 p.m.
