Mildred Elizabeth Gressley
July 24, 1922-July 22, 2014
Mildred Ogburn Gressley, the heart of our family, passed away July 22 at Spring Creek Assisted Living in Fruitland, Idaho. She was born the seventh of twelve children to Jordan Banks Ogburn and Betty Short Ogburn. As a child, she grew up picking cotton and baking pies and biscuits for her family. Her job as "family baker" began at age six and she continued to delight us with sweet treats her whole life. She graduated as the Valedictorian from Lake Valley High School and attended two years of Business College in Oklahoma City. She then got a job working for Alcoa Aluminum in Dallas, Texas; she later transferred to the Los Angeles office where she was the clerical assistant to the Vice President of the Company. It was in LA that she met the love of her life, Keith Gressley. They corresponded throughout WWII due to Keith's responsibility as a pilot for the Army Air Corp. After the war, they married in Dallas, Texas on May 4, 1946. In 1948, they purchased their first farm in the Treasure Valley area and made Ontario their home. Their eldest son, Bob, was born in 1950; Mary arrived in 1952 and Kristine was born in 1957. In 1974, the Gressley family welcomed their Japanese foreign exchange daughter, Miho, to their family. Miho became more than a student who resided in the Gressley home. She became a fourth child and a lifelong friend to the whole family, especially Mildred. Mildred enjoyed sewing, baking, playing cards, traveling, and especially shopping at Nordstrom with her granddaughters and daughters. She was a lifelong member of the Patch and Chat Club, a 4-H leader, a member of the First Baptist church and also involved in various other community organizations. Mildred Gressley will always be remembered as generous, charming, witty, friendly, classy, with a warmth that made everyone she encountered feel loved and welcomed.
She is survived by her siblings: Erma Coleman, Paul and LouWauna Ogburn, and Betty and Wilbur Johnson; her children: Bob and Letha Gressley, Mary and Byron Grow, Kristine and Mike VanLith and Miho and Yoshi Yoshioka; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Keith, her beloved grandson, David, five brothers and three sisters.
