Frances McCall Hudson died on Wednesday, July 23, 2014, three days before her 99th birthday.
She was born in Karuizawa, Japan, on July 26, 1915, where her parents served as missionaries.
Frances attended Berea College in Kentucky where she met and married Charles Edwin Hudson. After he served as a Navy Lieutenant in World War II he was a Boy Scout Field Executive in Mississippi and later the Chief Scout Executive for the Great Smokey Mountain Council in Knoxville. Frances taught school for many years in Dante, Heiskell and Farragut, and then was famous as "Ms. Goat," raising milk goats, and founding the East Tennessee Goat Club. She often showed her goats and was frequently called upon to be a judge in goat shows. In 1989 she and Charlie moved to Sevierville to live with Louise and Jim Rugh, and was active in the First United Methodist Church of Sevierville. During her last years she was cared for by her daughters, Mary Carpenter and Louise Rugh in their homes. She was a wonderful and beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, avid gardener, farmer, nutritionist, homemaker and teacher. She had a love and concern for people and animals.
Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edwin Hudson; her son, Robert M. Hudson; and a great- grandson, Noah Hudson Butler.
Frances Hudson is survived by three children and their spouses: Louise Hudson Rugh and husband, James W. Rugh of Sevierville, TN; Mary Hudson Carpenter of Powell, TN; Charles Greene Hudson and wife, Barbara Riddle Hudson of Prospect, VA; as well as Robert Hudson's widow, Edythe Hudson Thornton of Manchester, WA, and her 2nd husband, John Thorton. Frances is survived by 7 grandchildren and their spouses: Ashley Hudson Richardson and husband, Matt Richardson of Powell, TN; Blake Carpenter and wife, Julie Carpenter of Fayetteville, TN; Jennifer Rugh Shultz and husband, Eddie Shultz of Cosby, TN; Michael D. Rugh and wife, Idubina Castaneda Robledo Rugh of Sevierville, TN; Annah Hudson Dubois and husband, Kevin Dubois of Rockvale, TN; Ross Hudson and wife, Erica Louise Bulmon Hudson of Knoxville, TN; and McCayla Hudson Butler and husband, John Butler of Renton, WA. And Frances is survived by 19 great-grandchildren: Daniel, Hannah and Julia Richardson; Evangeline Carpenter Brandon and Essie Lee Carpenter; Jessica Nicole, Stephen Gene, Trinity Rose and Alexander Cole Shultz; Arioc and Arocy Rugh; Grayson, Emeline, Duncan Ross, Jacob and Tabitha Michelle Dubois; Aedan Edwin and McKenzie Louise Hudson, and Miles Samuel Butler.
In lieu of flowers, she would appreciate it if well-wishers would make contributions to Heifer International, so that families in other countries could have goats – her favorite animal!
Following her wishes, her body will be cremated.
