BERNARD WATHEN, SHIVELY FIRE CHIEF SINCE 1964, DIES - BERNARD J. WATHEN, 49, chief of the Shively Fire Department, died at 6:22 p.m. yesterday at SS. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital. He was admitted to the hospital on Aug. 20. Wathen was a native of Bardstown and lived at 2121 West Lane. He was named the fire chief of the Shively department in Jan. 1964. A former chef and Donaldson Bakery employee, Wathen had served for many years with the Dixie Surburban Volunteer Fire Department. He had been elected chief on numerous occasions while he was with that group. In 1973, Wathen was named to a then reorganized Shively city employee pension committee. He also was elected president of the Kentucky Firemen's Association that year. One of his first official acts was to bid for the 1974 state convention, which was held the following year in Shively. The body was taken to the W. G. Hardy Shively Funeral Home, 4101 Dixie Highway.

Funeral services for Shively fire chief Bernard J. Wathen Sr., will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Helen Catholic Church, 4005 Dixie Highway, with burial in Calvary Cemetery. Wathen, 49, of 2121 West Lane, died Tuesday at SS. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital. He had been chief of the Shively Fire Department since 1964. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, a member of Dixie Post 220 of the American Legion and treasurer of the Jefferson County Fire Fighters Corp. Survivors include his wife, the former Natalie Mulligan; two daugheers, Virginia A. and Frances M. Wathen; two sons, Bernard Joseph Jr., and Michael B. Wathen, and his mother, Mrs. Mary P. Wathen. The body is at W. G. Hardy Shively Funeral Home, 4101 Dixie Highway. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Bernie Wathen Firemen's Fund in Shively.
