Lt. Colonel William Baker Yarbrough, U.S.A.R. (Retired), 88, of Sharpsburg died on March 1, 2015.

A public graveside memorial service in Marietta, GA, will be announced at a later date.

Col. Yarbrough is survived by his loving wife of almost 70 years, Wanda Belle Yarbrough of Sharpsburg; three sons, Larry Wayne Yarbrough and wife Laura of Acworth, GA, David Lee Yarbrough and wife Edith of Jamestown, NC, and Dan Coleman Yarbrough and wife Beth of Peachtree City, GA; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Col. Yarbrough was born in 1926 in Memphis, Tennessee. He was the third of five children of Thomas Curtis and Minta Baker Yarbrough. He attended Central High School in Memphis, and upon graduation enlisted in the Navy and served in the Pacific Theater aboard the carrier USS Windham Bay in WWII.

He married Wanda during a two-week leave in 1945. Upon the conclusion of WWII, he attended Memphis State University, working part-time as a barber. He subsequently joined the US Army and attended Officer Candidate School and flight training. While in the Army, he completed his bachelor’s degree in Military Science from the University of Nebraska in 1964. As an Army officer, aircraft pilot and helicopter pilot, he served in the Korean War (1950-52) and the Vietnam War (1965-66).

After retiring from the Army in 1968, he and his wife settled in Palmetto, Georgia, and he served with US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as a sky marshal and a field agent with airport security. In 1989 he retired from the FAA and moved to Sharpsburg, GA. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Peachtree City.
