William Hugh Hardwick went to be with his Lord on Monday, March 2, 2015, at his home in Norman.

He leaves his wife of 66 years, Mary Lou Hardwick; son, Michael Hardwick and wife Lynda; son, Chris Hardwick and wifeSandy; grandchildren Daniel Hardwick and wife Ashleigh, Kelli Hardwick and husband Jesus Quintero Reyes, Dylan Mackey, Sean Hardwick, Heath Mackey, Jack Hardwick, Will Hardwick, Sydni Wilson and Jack Wilson; great-granchildren Logan Laughlin, Kadynn Hardwick and Harper Hardwick; sister, Gail Portwood and husband Jay and family; sister, Diane Freeny; and many nieces and nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Beatrice Hardwick.

Born July 28, 1926, in Norman, Bill was a resident of Lexington and attended school through his senior year at Lexington High School. After graduation, Bill joined the U.S. Navy during World War II. After serving his country, he attended the University of Oklahoma, where he received a degree in business administration.

It was during college years that he met Mary Lou Rowland, from Wewoka. Bill and Mary Lou married June 10, 1948, and made their home in Norman. Bill was employed by Kunkel’s Plumbing, then the city of Norman as city inspector. He also served as chairman of the planning commission and two terms as a city councilman. Bill received his license as a real estate broker, enjoyed many years as a Norman home builder and as a licensed certified residential appraiser.

Bill loved his family and dedicated his whole life to his wife, Mary Lou, their children, grandchildren and animals and also enjoyed many vacations in Destin, Fla. He was a passionate OU basketball and football fan. It was once said that Bill’s patience, while participating as a Norman city councilman, was a good example for any person interested in serving his city and fellowman.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, 220 Webster Ave. in Norman.
