Barbara Isabelle Watters, 92, of Sturgis, passed away peacefully at home on March 11, 2015, after a short stay at Thurston Woods Village.
Barbara, the daughter of the late Ernest and Jessie (Marantette) Estes, was born Feb. 22, 1923, in Mendon, and grew up in Constantine. She was predeceased by her brother, Elliot (Pete) Estes and sister, Jane Brown.
Barbara was a fan of her alma matter, Michigan State, where she received a degree in home economics and worked at Hudson’s Department Store in Detroit as an assistant buyer. She married William S. Cratin (deceased) and they relocated to Illinois.
Barbara and William raised their family in Clarendon Hills, Ill. She participated in the Notre Dame Parish, Clarendon Hills Infant Welfare Society and was a real estate agent at Rich Port Realtor for 13 years. Barbara loved dancing and she could be found playing bridge every Friday afternoon with her favorite foursome.
Barbara retired to Klinger Lake, White Pigeon, where she lived for the past 36 years with her second husband, Paul R. Watters. She enjoyed the Sturgis Garden Club, volunteered at Sturgis Hospital, was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in White Pigeon, Klinger Lake Country Club, and was an avid bridge player. She loved to entertain friends and relatives when they lived on Klinger Lake.
Barbara is survived by her husband of 38 years, Paul R. Watters. Her children are Robert (Frannie) Cratin. Thomas (Chris) Cratin, and Carol Cratin; her step-children, Jennie (Tim) Keith, Jeff (Lynn) Watters and Steve Watters (deceased) and his former wife: Janie Edwards; nine grandchildren, Caycee (Pat) Angelo, Steven (Alexander) Cratin, Peter Cratin, Travis (Karen) Keith, Catherine (Kyle) Hazen, Lindsey (Brett) Stuebinger, Kelly (Matt) Crystal, Trey Keith, Kristen Keith, ten great-grandchildren and seven nieces and nephews.
In accordance with Barbara’s wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from
4-7 p.m. Thursday, March 19, at the Rosenberg Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 807 E. Chicago Road, Sturgis, where the Rosary will be recited at
6:30 p.m. Thursday. The funeral Mass celebrating the life of Barbara Watters will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, March 20, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church,
16603 U.S. 12, White Pigeon.
The family suggests those wishing to make a memorial donation in Mrs. Watters’ memory consider St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 16603 U.S. 12, White Pigeon, MI 49099.
