Rick A. Helmers, 58, of Fort Dodge, died Friday, November 27, 2015, at his residence, in the loving care of his family and Unity Point Hospice.
A service honoring Rick’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 3, at the Gunderson Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Jim Barnett officiating. The visitation is Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Memorials may be directed to the discretion of the family.
Rick is survived by his beloved wife Eileen; his children, Jerad Helmers, Fort Dodge; Janelle (Lucas) Lumsden, Fort Dodge; grandchildren Aryssa, Amyrra and Aythan Lumsden. Rick was very proud of his kids and grandchildren. Rick is also survived by his siblings, Dave (Judy) Helmers, Coalville; Audrey (Darrell) Rude, Polk City; and their families; and a very special father-in-law Gerry Knudson, whom he loved very much. Rick was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Ethel (Byson) Helmers, his brother Brian Helmers, and a very special mother-in-law Arlys Knudson.
Rick was born in Des Moines, Iowa on June 6, 1957. He grew up on a farm in Duncombe, Iowa and attended Fort Dodge Senior High, graduating in 1976. Rick was united in marriage to Eileen (Knudson) Helmers in 1980. They established their home in Fort Dodge. Rick was employed at Cerne Calcium until the time of his illness.
Rick enjoyed woodworking, camping, fishing, many wonderful motorcycle trips and was always a practical joker and full of life.
Rick cherished time spent with his family. He adored his grandchildren and his special puppy, Minny.
Rick will be deeply missed by his loving family and all who knew him.
