Rev. John F. Carty, 67, of Colonial Heights, died August 9, 2002 at Colonial Heights Convalescent Center after a short period. He was a native of Norfolk, Va.

John F. Carty made his profession of faith in Trinity Baptist Church of Norfolk where in 1959, he was ordained to the gospel ministry. Reverend Carty was a graduate of the University of Richmond (B.A.), received his master of religious education degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and a master of divinity degree from Southeast Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C. He did doctor of ministry work at Drew University in Madison, N.J. Rev. Carty's first full time pastorate was Scottsburg Baptist Church in Halifax County from 1963 to 1969. He served four other Virginia Baptist churches: Raleigh Forbes Memorial, Richmond (1969 - 1973), North Run, Richmond (1973 - 1977), Purcellville in Loudoun County (1977 - 1987), and Woodlawn Baptist Church, Colonial Heights, from January, 1988 until his retirement January 1, 1997. He was a past vice-president of the Petersburg Baptist Association Ministers Conference, and secretary-treasurer of Colonial Heights Clergy Association, and served on the Virginia Baptist General Board.He also served as trustee of Children's Home of Virginia Baptist, and a Sunday school lesson writer for The Religious Herald.

Mr. Carty was preceded in death by his first wife of many years, Barbara Mason Carty.
