Simon Butler was born it is believed, in Sudan West Africa. Probably before the age of ten years old, he was brought to America as a slave. He was raised and lived on the Big Creek Plantation there in Saluda. Simon was married to Esther. It is hard to record the date they were married, and also to list names of their sixteen children. However three of the children were named Marshall, Margaret and Judy Butler. According to oral family history, three of the children were sold, as a punishment, due to their mother, angering her slave master General Butler. Simon was a farmer, but little else is known about him. He died after the Civil War, but there is no record of his death. Family history affirmed that he passed away shortly after Freedom. Most likely he was buried on the land of General William Butler's plantation.
