Ruth's Story

Ruth B. Strong, 63, of Hartwick passed away unexpectedly due to complications from diabetes at her home on June 28, 2016.

Ruth was born on July 5, 1952 in the town of New Berlin to Murry and Evelyn Benjamin of Burlington Flats.

Ruth worked as a LPN for the county, working at The Meadows, than on to be The Manor; working there from April 1978 to July of 2008. Ruth worked primarily with the advanced dementia population, loving her work, referring to her residents as extended family. Family was the most important thing to Ruth, she took pride in all of her children and grandchildren.
After retirement Ruth still longed for and felt the need to do something meaningful and so for the last 3 years she worked one day a week as a volunteer for Catholic Charities of Otsego and Delaware counties. Ruth enjoyed her time there and other employees and clients alike enjoyed her. Ruth was nominated and received Volunteer of The Year Award last year, enjoying an appreciation dinner in Albany with nominees and recipients of other awards with the Bishop.

Ruth was an avid reader and was a member of the Stephen King fan and book club.

Ruth was predeceased by her parents; ex-husband but still best friend and father to her children, Arthur Strong and most devastatingly Ruth's first born child, Charles Strong.

Ruth is survived by her daughter, Donna Osborne and Gerard Knutsen of Oneonta and their daughter, Serena Howard; her son, Joel and Samantha Strong of Hartwick and their children, Connor, Trevor, Jolene and Kyleigh; and her son, Brian and Katie Strong of Bryson City, NC and their sons, Johnathyn and Xavier; Charles' children, Sebastian and Trent Boyles and Lily and Kyle Strong, all of Sharon Springs; also her siblings, Debbie Wright, Joanne Walkden and Karl Benjamin, all of Burlington Flats; numerous cousins, and countless friends.

The following is a poem that Ruth has carried with her for the last 40 years; it sums up her philosophy of life:
Don't Quit
When things go wrong as they sometimes will
When the road you're trudging seems all up hill
When the funds are low, and the debts are high
And you want to smile, but have to sigh
When care is pressing you down a bit...
Rest if you must, but do not quit
Success is failure turned inside out
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt
And you can never tell how close you are
It maybe near when it seems so far
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit...
It's when things go wrong that you must not quit.

There will be no services at Ruth request, though there may be a celebration of life at a later date.

Contributions may be made in Ruth's name to any suicide prevention organization of your choice.
