Robert Louis Dougherty, 54, of Palatka, died Aug. 19, 2016, at Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center after a heroic struggle with pancreatic cancer.
For those who loved him, it was a difficult loss. He was amazing in so many ways. He was clean and sober for 22 years and overcame the handicap of only an eighth-grade education to master many occupations, such as big truck driver, business owner (restaurant, maintenance service, carpet cleaning company, etc.), wheeler-dealer and tow truck driver. He enjoyed cooking, building stuff, spending time with his family, Gator games, NASCAR, and television. He truly had many good traits, but the one that stood out was if you needed him, he would be there for you.
He is preceded in death by parents John and Agnes Thomas Daugherty; a brother, Jac Dougherty; two nephews, Michael Daugherty and Bryan Atchison; and a step-grandson, Jesse Waters.
Surviving are his wife, Judy Wanamaker Dougherty of Fort McCoy; two sons and daughters-in-law, Corey and Jennifer Wanamaker of St. Augustine and Chris and Shae Wanamaker of McMinnville, Tenn.; three daughters, Amy Dougherty of Gainesville, Kristen Dougherty of Las Vegas and Grace Anderson of Tracey City, Tenn.; three brothers, Ricki Dougherty of Gainesville, Billy Dougherty of West Virginia and Michael Dougherty of Gainesville; two sisters and brothers-in-law Linda and Bruce Atchison of Palatka and Donna and Russell Van Ryzin of Wisconsin, and eight grandchildren, Josie, Brooklynn, Paisley, Jude, Heather, Hunter, Isaac and Josh.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Aug. 24 at Ravine Gardens State Park Pavilion. His very good friends, John and Sandy Gillespie, will officiate, and he will be viewed in a casket custom made by Steve Gillespie, in which he will be cremated. Services are informal and will be outside. The family asks that guests read a poem, tell a story, sing a song and feel free to speak. You are creating his final goodbye.
