Katie Meredith was born September 10, 1932 in Des Moines, Iowa to Dorice (1897-1974) and George Powers Comfort (1894- ). Living primarily in Des Moines, she spent many wonderful years in Sarasota, Florida and Big Horn, Wyoming. She passed away at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines on December 18, 2014.
Katie was a mother, community volunteer and philanthropist. Katie's clever Irish disposition, quick wit and warm heart touched the lives of countless people. She and her late husband Ted raised Mid, Mell and Tom to be some really great kids (strong-minded and just as stubborn as their parents). Katie and Ted spent 49 years as partners in fun and in business at Meredith Corporation. They enjoyed an adventurous life of boating, hunting, fishing and flying their young family across country with Katie often surprising air traffic control by manning the radio. She also became a pilot.
Katie was instrumental in founding the Science Center of Iowa, served for many years on its Board of Directors and continued this avid interest throughout her life. She also had many other passions including Junior League, Garden Club, the Salvation Army, The Greater Des Moines Botanical Center, the Blank Park Zoo, Simpson College and Drake University, just to mention a few. As a western art enthusiast and long-time Wyoming resident, Katie served on the Board of the Charles M Russell Museum in Great Falls, Montana and the Bradford Brinton Museum in Big Horn, Wyoming.
Katie is survived by her children, Dianna "Mell" Meredith Frazier, E.T. "Tom" Meredith IV, eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, E.T. "Ted" Meredith III and daughter, Mildred "Mid" Meredith. She leaves behind her lifelong friend, Dr. William "Bill" Hornaday.
Visitation will be held at Iles Funeral Homes - Dunn's Chapel, Des Moines from 2:00 to 3:30 PM on Sunday, December 21, with services at St. Ambrose Cathedral, Des Moines at 10:00 AM on Monday, December 22.
