Dick Baumann

Dick Baumann, 91, of Monterey, passed away Monday, April 14, 2014. He was born in Salinas December 31, 1922.
He was raised in Soledad, attended Gonzales High School, served in World War II, and worked for PG&E, transferring to Monterey in 1954. He married Evelyn Garcia July 17, 1949 and they had two daughters, Becky and Dorothy. During their fifty-five years of married life, Dick and Evelyn enjoyed many family camping trips, and made all the low tides for abalone and cabazon.
Dick loved the outdoors and was a very avid backpacker. Before finishing a hike, he was planning his next. In the Los Padres Forest alone, he figured he spent 400 nights out under the stars. He was 11-1/2 years old in 1934 when he spent his first night camping out with the Boy Scouts in the Arroyo Seco. He spent a lot of time hiking in the Sierras, including a month hiking the John Muir Trail. He also volunteered with Sierra Club work parties on Santa Cruz Island.
After retiring from PG&E in 1982 he volunteered for Jo Chapman on her beautiful ranch in Big Sur (Rancho Calera) and there spent what he said was the best 20 years of his life. Besides attending to ranch chores, he found time to deer hunt, collect and sell mushrooms, and cut firewood.
He was preceded in death by wife, Evelyn; his two brothers, Bill and Bob Baumann; father, William Baumann Sr., and mother Anita (Ramos) Baumann.
Dick is survived by daughters, Becky (Russ) Noyes and Dorothy Baumann (JB Borris); grandchildren, Cindy (Bernard) Salazar, Mathew Noyes, and Amanda (Lalo) Hernandez; great grandchild, Maryanne Salazar; aunt, Anna Schweizer; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Baumann and Vonnie Baumann, and dear cousins, nieces, nephews, and good friends.
Vigil will be held Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at the Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas, CA. 93901.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Thursday, April 24, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. at San Carlos Cathedral, Monterey, CA.
